Meet the 2018 Chevy Colorado at McCarthy-Morse Chevrolet

So-called “compact” (mid-size) pickups are the new darlings of the road in America, appealing to those looking for the utility of a pickup truck without having to spend their lives filling up at the gas station. They’re easier to drive — and park — in congested areas of Kansas City, while also being fun to drive in more rural areas. In other words, midsize trucks offer something that many drivers are looking for today: versatility.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado offers that versatility along with great performance in a stylish-looking, option-packed package. Here’s how the experts rate the new Colorado, which is available for sale and lease right now at our Overland Park Chevy dealer.

Value Even With the Base Level Trim

Motor Trend reviewers point out that even if you go no farther than the base trim level, you’ll still get plenty of value like Bluetooth, a rear-view camera, Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a USB port, a six-speaker audio system, a 3.5-inch instrument cluster display and 16-inch steel wheels.

Power and Torque

The last thing you want in a pickup truck a lack of power, and that’s not something you’ll have to worry about with the 2018 Chevy Colorado. You’ve got your choice between the basic 2.0-liter with 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, a 3.6-liter V6 that cranks out 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, or a fuel-sipping yet powerful 2.4-liter turbo-diesel that delivers 181 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque for superior towing capability.

The basic transmission (paired with the 2.0 4-liter engine) is a 6-speed manual, but a 6-speed automatic is also available. The diesel comes exclusively with a 6-speed manual, and the V6 has an 8-speed automatic, which was designed “in-house” by Chevrolet.

Reviewers at U.S. News call the Colorado “one of the most capable members of its class.” Not a bad impression from a bunch of guys whose job it is to be ruthless when rating performance!

Fuel Economy

If saving money at the pump is your primary goal, you should opt for the base or WT models which have the 4-cylinder engine and great fuel economy — 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The diesel is also a fuel sipper, boasting 20 mpg in the city and a whopping 28 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel drive and a larger engine will obviously cut into those stellar numbers, but it all comes down to what your priorities happen to be.

Opting for the more powerful V6 engine will still get you 18 mpg in the city and a respectable 25 mpg on the highway. Adding 4-wheel drive to the equation drops mileage numbers a bit to around 16-17 mpg city and 18-24 mpg on the highway.

When it comes to utility from a pickup truck, you’re looking for the ability to tow when you need to and to load up the bed with whatever it is you need to tote from point A to point B. The Colorado has, as U.S. News reviewers point out, “excellent towing and hauling capacities. When properly equipped (with the diesel turbo-charged engine), it has a maximum payload of nearly 1,600 pounds, and it’s a class leader in towing, with a max capacity of 7,700 pounds.”

Feel free to load up the bed (available in 5- or 6-foot lengths) since the 2018 Colorado has a maximum payload of more than 1570 lbs.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado has a quiet cabin that’s good looking and comfortable. The base model is equipped with an easy-to-clean vinyl floor since it’s a model meant more for hard work than luxury. Move up one level to the WT (short for “work truck”) and you get a carpeted floor, plus storage under the rear seats of the crew cab.

But comfort is about more than supportive seats and plenty of head and leg room. It’s also about the driving experience, and a smooth-shifting transmission, a quiet and smooth ride, plus plenty of acceleration make the Colorado a pleasure to drive.

Model Choices and Options

Besides the base model and the WT mentioned above, there’s an LT which adds lots of features including a larger 8-inch touchscreen plus additional USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, a power adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control and more.

If you’re into off-roading or just want the convenience and added control offered by 4-wheel drive, you can opt for the Z1 and Z2 packages, which include things like a beefier off-road suspension package, automatic locking rear differential, a transfer case shield, all-terrain tires, and luxuries like leather seats, automatic climate control, hill descent control, and numerous other practical niceties.
